Styrofoam hats. Brain buckets. Skid lids. The essence of cranial crash protection. There's a litany of options available, with little differentiating the competition. Italian helmet brand KASK endeavors to change that with the Protone, developed in tandem with Team Sky. Our biggest takeaway with the Protone? It's a culmination of the little things. At first glance, the paint quality is top-notch, with each colorway offering a deep richness that's incredibly well-designed. The chinstrap is made of eco-leather, a distinctly classy, Italian touch that's incredibly comfortable to the touch. The retention system (dubbed Octo Fit) is immensely versatile, allowing fore-aft adjustment, as well as the standard roller diameter mechanism at the helmet's rear.
The Protone is KASK's offering into the semi-aero category, a versatile, do-all helmet offering excellent ventilation along with a high degree of aerodynamics and style. While not as free-flowing and lightweight as a true "climbing" helmet (a la the Catlike Mixino), it's quite close, while sitting quite a bit lower on the head.
