BOTW: A John Player Special inspired Baum Corretto

Anthony Little |

This week we get to show off this Baum Corretto in black and gold. The colors are based on one of our favorite Formula One cars, the Lotus 72D. While Lotus at that time were known for pushing the boundaries of performance and weight reduction taking a driver with as much balls as brains to drive well, we looked to do the same with this bike, only adding the durability that the car was notoriously missing.

Our build looked like this:

  • Baum Corretto frame with custom geometry and fully custom butted tubes (all of them), Chris King headset, 44mm head tube, Enve tapered fork, Enve stem and seat post, both custom painted to match.
  • Campagnolo Super Record EPS group
  • EE brake calipers
  • Ceramicspeed coated bottom bracket bearings and coated titanium derailleur pulleys
  • Lightweight Meilenstein Scharz ed. wheels
  • Continental Competition 25mm tubulars
  • Fizik Bull 00 bars
  • Fizik Superlight tape
  • Fizik Aliante R1 saddle
  • King titanium cages, refinished by Baum
  • Speedplay Zero pedals with titanium spindles
  • Bar Fly 2.0 Garmin Mount

We think that Formula One should make new rules to make cars look like this again. MEAN!

The new EE brake calipers.

Lightweight Schwarz edition Meilenstein wheels. Same as the standard but with blacked out logos and a full Ceramicspeed bearing upgrade.

(Left) If Mavic were still building drivetrains, this would be the evolution of the great "starfish" crank that they made 20+ years ago… (Right) Paint scheme is Baum's GTR Pin.

The Campagnolo Super Record EPS front mech with the EPS chain watcher, though it's not really needed as the derailleur works wonderfully, though better safe than sorry, especially considering the rough roads this bike will be ridden on.

IMG_5744

The new Fizik Aliante R1. Same general shape, though at this point we prefer the older model, but I'm sure with time this will grow on us.

IMG_5756

The EE brake caliper from the rear. One thing we really love about these is the really nice cable routing to the barrel adjuster.

Enve stem with the Apollo top cap, good for close to 5g! Hey, details! :-)

Skewers are light and trick, but what we'd give for Campagnolo to make a new, lighter and tricker release of there incredible skewers from the older 10spd group! Something that would face forward and fit under the hooded dropouts. Please Campagnolo? Pretty please?! But back to the dropouts and those welds, so clean. And both the chain and seat stays are custom butted as well.

This is where you charge the Campagnolo EPS battery…
